Leading to the well there is what Amanda Clark suggests may be the original pilgrimage path which is a boreen with pebble floors and high walls (https://holywellsofcork.com/2016/04/06/a-clutch-of-wells-around-castlefreke/). It seems well taken care of with a statue of Mary atop the wellhouse, there are flowers planted on the wellhouse surrounding Mary. In Amanda Clark's photograph you can see that there is a mug left at the well
