3 Physical description of well and its surroundings

The well itself is closed off from the top by a metal structure which prevents access to the water and is surrounded by pavement. At the head of the well is a statue of Our Lady. Surrounding the well, there is a grotto, a part, a large sculpture, and more, all dedicated to Our Lady.

5 Pattern day

The main pattern day for Our Lady’s well is August 15th. It is a large time for gatherings of families and community members as public prayers are held (see Kennedy web page for more info).

8 Stories

At the location of the well, local tradition states that on August 15th, 1249, an apparition of Our Lady appeared to a wounded Marian soldier after “The Battle of Athenry.”
