French writes that “there was a holy well known as Tobar Padraig in a field owned by Michael Fox of Balrath” (French 2012: 4).

St Patrick was said to drink from this well on his journey from Slane to see the High King at Tara (French 2012: 4).
“In the 1930’s every St Patrick’s day, Jane Murphy of Sicily, visited Tobar Padraig to recite the Rosary. She said that some years before a neighbor was cutting a bush that grew at the well. When he had nearly cut through the bush gave a groan, so he refused to saw it again. The bush was never disturbed afterwards and it continued to grow at the well. A giant ash tree and bushes grew around the well” (French 2012: 4).
