3 Physical description of well and its surroundings

The well is located “on the Spout Road in Whitestown, south of Rush. It is located under an unchecked Leylandii hedge adjacent to the house called ‘Millbrook’. The Leylandii hedge on this well over the last couple of years has completely obscured it from view [which] resulted in an all surrounding vegetation dying due to lack of sunlight. The water, however, remains clear” (Branigan 2012: 61-62).

"Legend has it that a group of French sailors, possibly Crusaders, were driven off course in a ... storm at sea, and just before the point of perishing, prayed to their patron, St Maur. [The sailors] vowed that, if they were to survive, they would build a chapel in his honour at the point [where] they reached land. This was the present day Whitestown, and the ruins of this building [are] within the local graveyard nearby” (Branigan 2012: 62).
