Branigan notes that “St Pappin’s Well was located in a private garden in Santry Villas, just outside the grounds of the Church of Ireland. It was approached by a flight of stone steps…The well was recently destroyed during the course of building works” (Branigan 2012: 73). The well still exists on one side of a wall, but is generally dry.

5 Pattern day

According to Branigan, the well “was the site of a large pattern, which was held under the branches of a sacred tree, known as the Poppintree which existed near to the crossroads where the Ballymun Road meets Santry Avenue. It is the site of only a few Sacred Trees, or Bíle, which have been identified in Leinster” (Branigan 2012: 73).
