3 Physical description of well and its surroundings

“St Kevin’s Well is located on the site of the original monastic settlement where St Kevin was educated as a young man, and adjacent to the now destroyed Kilnamanagh Castle. There is a long tradition of occupation here and bones and domestic items continue to surface in the gardens…the well was destroyed, but due to the high level of underground springs in the area which would have been occupied by Nos. 37, 39, 41, and 43 Elmcastle Walk was too waterlogged, and could not be built on so the well was reconstructed in a small garden. Unfortunately, and inexplicably, the council filled in the well in or around 2003 and erected a large fence around the entire site, with access being forbidden” (Branigan 2012: 89-91).
