3 Physical description of well and its surroundings

Houlihan states that "The well site stands in a shaded quarter-acre site full of light and shade, with mature trees. [...] The holy well site has several features that include a stone that is said to show Saint Flannan's footprint, a fine ash tree locally known as 'The unusual tree' and a stone-lined hollow or 'bed', in which people lie for a cure of backache. Individual homemade shrines, fashioned from everyday household pieces, and containing images of saints, are attached to several trees at the site [...] The well is contained within a protective well house that is heavily ornamented with statues and religious gifts. A second water source for home supply is to the right" (Houlihan 2015: 115-116).
